Dracula
(1931) DVD
Starring: Lugosi, Chandler,
Béla Lugosi's most famous role
of Transylvanian vampire Count Dracula, resulting both Lugosi's baroque
career and the horror-movie cycle of the 1930s. Count Dracula and his blood-sucking
devotee (Dwight Frye, in one of the cinema's truly mad performances) meet
their match in a vampire-hunter called Van Helsing (Edward Van Sloan). |

Horror
of Dracula (1957) VHS
Starring: Christopher Lee
One of the best Dracula movies ever made.
Christopher Lee makes his entrance as an elegant, confident, altogether
seductive Dracula, a frightening figure of flashing eyes and erotic allure.
The Count is an old-world aristocrat firmly ensconced in a castle in England
and Van Helsing a crusading vampire hunter who plots his demise with an
elaborate plan. This is the first film to really mine the erotic appeal
of vampires: Dracula seduces Mina and Lucy like a devil tempting good to
the dark side through sex--more suggestive than explicit, but daring for
1957-1958. |

Bram
Stoker's Dracula (1992) DVD
Starring: Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder
With dizzying cinematic tricks and astonishing
performances, Francis Coppola's 1992 version of the oft-filmed Dracula
story is one of the most exuberant, extravagant films of the 1990s. Gary
Oldman and Winona Ryder, as the Count and Mina Murray, are quite a pair
of star-crossed lovers. She's betrothed to another man; he can't kick the
habit of feeding off the living. Anthony Hopkins plays Van Helsing, the
vampire slayer, with tongue firmly in cheek. Tom Waits is great fun as
Renfield, the hapless slave of Dracula who craves the blood of insects
and cats. Sadie Frost is a sexy Lucy Westenra. And poor Keanu Reeves, as
Jonathan Harker, has the misfortune to be seduced by Dracula's three half-naked
wives. There's a little bit of everything in this version of Dracula: gore,
high-speed horseback chases, passion, and longing. |
