The
Horse Whisperer: Songs From and Inspired by the Motion Picture
[SOUNDTRACK]
- Various Artists - Soundtracks - Song Collections
|
|
Audio CD (April 7, 1998); Number of Discs: 1
All too often, event-movie soundtracks turn out to be little more than
a chance for a label to repackage its catalog material in an emperor's-new-clothes
fashion. But this carefully constructed collection of Western-tinged tracks--inspired
by but not all taken from the film--never approaches that territory. The
album is suffused by a high-lonesome feel, characterized by contributions
from such artists as Dwight Yoakam and Lucinda Williams (whose "Still I
Long for Your Kiss" is a piquant highlight). Folk aficionados will also
revel in the presence of the reunited Flatlanders (Butch Hancock, Joe Ely,
and Jimmie Dale Gilmore, who originally performed together in the early
1970s), who turn in a sultry "South Wind of Summer."

Hope
Floats: Music From The Motion Picture [SOUNDTRACK]
Various
Artists - Soundtracks - Song Collections
Audio CD (May 19, 1998); Number of Discs: 1
Though it follows a standard movie formula and predictable plot twists,
the film Hope Floats is saved in part by the above-average performance
of Sandra Bullock, portraying a separated woman who finds her way back
to her hometown in Texas, daughter in tow. The soundtrack seems to follow
in due course, a collection of country and rock (thanks to the Rolling
Stones) acts adding shades of twang to songs that, for the most part, all
sound fairly familiar. The duds of the bunch, Bryan Adams's "When You Love
Someone" and Sheryl Crow's "In Need," are saved in large part by some surprise
keepers, courtesy of Garth Brooks, the Mavericks, and Gillian Welch. The
covers are interesting enough. Brooks's take on Dylan's "To Make You Feel
My Love" is modest and pithy and a far cry from the overblown Trisha Yearwood
performance of the same tune that codas the collection.

Pure
Country (Soundtrack) - George Strait
Audio CD (September 15, 1992)
Number of Discs: 1
George Strait made his silver screen debut in this honky-tonk movie.
George Strait takes Texan honky-tonk and masculine ballads of romantic
regret, and delivers impeccably. He may wear his heart deep inside those
famously well-pressed cowboy shirts, rather than on his sleeve, but you
can hear it beating all the same. |
