| Largely, er, "inspired" by German director Wim Wenders' classic fable
Wings of Desire, this heavenly melodrama features a high watermark for
overwrought modern pop-song scores. U2's "If God Will Send His Angels"
might just certify their on-the-sleeve spirituality as moribund, while
Alanis Morissette's radio hit "Uninvited" conjures the frightening specter
of Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" (fronted by a teenage Celine Dion-in-training),
making the efforts of vets Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker, Peter Gabriel,
and Eric Clapton sound downright Mancini-esque by comparison.
Veteran composer Gabriel Yared finds himself ghettoized on the disc's final tracks, but then he only scored the film. --Jerry McCulley

The soundtrack consists of dance and trash pop songs playing non-stop, forming a kind of historical narrative behind the action. The Emotions (Best Of My Love), McFadden & Whitehead (Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now) and The Commodores (Machine Gun) achieve this with ease. |

By this time in her career, Whitney Houston had a formula sound, and here she leans on it hard, surrounding herself with adult contemporary heavy-hitters like Diane Warren and Babyface. This wasn't the monster her previous records were, most notably The Bodyguard soundtrack, even though it seems to be an overt attempt at satisfying the same audience. Her voice is as crystalline as ever, but overall it seems a somewhat soulless effort, even though the themes are much more secular than she's braved before. --Scott Wilson |

Phenomenon is a remarkable movie on the brilliance (and fear) of human potential. Eric Clapton's contribution sets the tone while the rest of the song take you on a journey through some very different styles. Overall a pleasant surprise. |
