Cottontail Rabbit

Watch Cottontail Rabbit Video Clip:

Cottontail rabbits (genus Sylvilagus) are very pretty animals and widely distributed across North America, Central America and northern and central South America. They are confined to particular regions and most (though not all) species live in nests called forms, and all have altricial young. In mammal and bird biology, altricial species are those species whose newly hatched or born young are relatively immobile, lack hair or down, are not able to obtain food on their own, and must be cared for by adults. Altricial young are born helpless (closed eyes are common, though not ubiquitous) and require care for a length of time.

An adult female averages three litters per year, which can occur in any season; occurrence, and litter size depend on several factors including time of the year, weather, and location. The average rabbit litter size is four but can range from as few as two to as many as eight, most of whom do not go on to survive to adulthood.
