Online Safety

Malware

Malware is short for 'malicious software' and includes viruses, spyware and other unwanted software that gets installed on your computer or mobile device without your consent. These programs can cause your device to crash and can be used to monitor and control your online activity. They also can make your computer vulnerable to viruses and deliver unwanted or inappropriate ads. Criminals use malware to steal personal information, send spam, and commit fraud.

Unfortunately, there are bad people who get their jollies by interfering with, stealing from and generally harming other people. We all know this. Logically we must then understand that if we connect to the Net, we become potential victims of these cyber-grubs. But, on the other hand, we can learn how to protect ourselves. If we have proper knowledge we are not powerless victims, we are prepared for the bad stuff and ready to protect ourselves.

The security of your computer, phone, and other mobile devices can affect the safety of your online experience — and that of your kids. Malware could allow someone to steal your family’s personal or financial information.

Malware is software that can: install viruses, monitor or control your computer use, send unwanted pop-up ads, redirect your device to websites you’re not looking for or record your keystrokes

Mobile Sharing and Networking

Socializing and sharing on-the-go can foster creativity and fun, but could cause problems related to personal reputation and safety. Use care when sharing photos and videos. Most mobile phones have camera and video capability, making it easy for teens to capture and share every moment. Encourage kids to get permission from the photographer or the person in the shot before posting videos or photos. It’s easier to be smart upfront about what media they share than to do damage control later. Find out more...
