I,
Tina: My Life Story - by
Tina Turner, Kurt Loder - This
is a wonderful tale about a wonderful woman. From
modest beginnings to becoming the rage of three generations,
to bursting through in 1985 and sweeping the Grammy awards
with her album Private Dancer, Tina Turner is a true rock survivor, and
in this candid autobiography, Tina tells
it the
way it is.
Who can resist this diva's vocals ripping through song after song?
The Queen of Rock 'n' Roll and one of the world's most popular
entertainers, Tina Turner has been called the most successful female
rock artist and was named "one of the greatest singers of all time" by
Rolling Stone.
Rolling
Stone (11/14/96)
...Turner's raspy, robust
alto and her ability to carry herself with both dignity and chutzpah are
as formidable as they were when she recorded the incendiary 'River Deep,
Mountain High' three decades ago...
Her records have sold nearly 180 million copies
worldwide. She has sold more concert tickets than any other solo music
performer in history. She is known for her energetic stage presence,
powerful vocals, career longevity, and widespread appeal.
Vibe
(10/96)
...Not only does this rambunctious,
wiggly 57-year-old woman still immolate a mike, she can open a show just
by asking,
`So...do you want some action?'...
Her musical career led to film roles, beginning with a prominent role as The Acid Queen in the 1975 film Tommy, and an appearance in Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. She starred opposite Mel Gibson as Aunty Entity in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome
for which she received the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in
a Motion Picture, and her version of the film's theme, "We Don't Need
Another Hero", was a hit single. She appeared in the 1993 film Last Action Hero.
What
the Critics Say:
When one magic formula
works, there's little point in looking for another one, especially when
new studio albums only turn up twice every decade. Your audience appeal
doesn't get enough exposure to pall.
What's
Love Got To Do With It? (1993) DVD - Tina Turner, that dynamic diva
of pop/soul/R&B from the '60s to the '90s, sings like a woman whose
life story is every bit as rough and tough as her voice. And What's Love
Got to Do With It, based on her autobiographical account (in I, Tina, written
with Kurt Loder) of her years under the iron fist of her abusive husband
& musical partner/Svengali Ike, is further proof of what we've
always known about Tina: She's what you call a survivor. The movie is sort
of the Disney version of Tina Turner's story--a glossy but thoroughly enjoyable,
old- fashioned showbiz biopic with laughs, tears, great music, and outrageous
(but faithful) period decor, costumes, makeup, and hairstyles. Our Heroine
triumphs not only over the rigorous demands of her career in the music
business, but finally manages to bust out of her troubled, violent marriage
as well and become her own person. This is a movie that'll have you shouting
at the top of your lungs: "You go, girl!" Tommy Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome Mad Max Soundtrack Last Action Hero
