Gubec Linden Tree or Gupčeva Lipa in Croatian Language

Gubec Linden Tree is located next to the local church of Sv. Juraj in Gornja Stubica and is the only living witness of the Great Peasant Rebellion that took place in 1573.

Under its branches, according to the legend, the peasant leader Matija Gubec gathered his like-minded people and insurgents and led them into a fight for their class rights against aristocracy which exploited them.

The rebellion was brutally pushed down, and the peasant leader Matija Gubec was executed (and became a hero too).

Due to its age and historical significance the Gubec Linden Tree was declared a protected natural monument in 1957 and placed under state protection as a cultural monument.
